This past weekend, the Orange County chapter of ChickTech hosted it’s very first annual High School Conference. ChickTech Orange County is a non profit dedicated to empowering women and girls to pursue their goals in STEAM. Helping young women and girls to learn skills in technology, as well as meet other like-minded girls, is one of the big goals of our chapter. We offered this two-day program as a free resources to students in our community. The OC leadership team has been working at planning and executing this conference for months. After countless hours of hard work and dedication, we are so excited to be able to call the ChickTech Orange County High School Conference 2018 a success!
For two days, 18 highschool students gathered to learn the fundamentals of how to build your own website, app, or microcontroller! Each student had the opportunity to work one-on-one with our talented tutors and workshop hosts. During the conference, our high school students each selected the workshop of their choice. Within each workshop, they had the opportunity to create a take home project on whatever topic they were interested in. During the “My First Website” class, some girls made websites about themselves, while others made websites about their favorite bands. In our “My First App” workshop, the girls banded together to start building a ChickTech OC app! The “Microcontrollers” group expressed a combination of creativity and hard skills to build blinking tote bags from scratch.
The students all worked extremely hard at their projects and all had something to present during our post-conference Tech Showcase. We invited friends, family, and the community to come view the hard work our girls put in over the weekend. The Tech Showcase was a chance for everyone to connect over STEAM while enjoying refreshments and celebrating the students. ChickTech Orange County is planning on rolling out even more high school initiatives, as well as events that will cater to even more of the OC area.
